Program Horse Criteria

StirrUp Purpose is always seeking horses that will fit into the program for years to come. It takes a very special horse to support the needs of equine assisted services, so we have a very thorough evaluation process.

  • No behavior issues, chronic health or back problems or soundness issues that would hinder performance.
  • Serviceably sound and with a free moving stride at the walk, trot, and canter.
  • "Been there, Done That" temperament.
  • Between the ages of 6 and 18.
  • Up to date with all vaccinations, deworming, farrier, and vet care.
  • Respectful ground manners. Well behaved under saddle.
  • Can live in an outdoor paddock other horses.
  • Calm, quiet and enjoys human interaction.

Lease or Donate Your Horse

Step 1

Step 1

Step 1

The horse owner fills out a Program Horse Application, including pictures and a video of the horse under saddle. The Equine Manager determines if we should pursue the horse further.

Fill Out an Application

Step 2

Step 1

Step 1

The Equine Manager connects with the horse owner to arrange a barn visit. The horse will be evaluated for health, training level, manners on the ground and under saddle, evenness of gait and general temperament.

Step 3

Step 3

Step 3

If the horse is a good candidate for programs, a 45-day trial period will be arranged. This trial allows us to expose the horse to all facets of the program.

Step 4

Step 3

Step 3

If the  trial is successful and the horse fits in with StirrUp Purpose, the horse will become a loved and valued member of the StirrUp Purpose team, helping to serve the community.
